Job purpose The position supports Store Management by contributing to the successful operation of the store. To supervise sales staff, ensure excellent customer service is provided by staff, and daily store functions are completed. Assume other responsibilities as requested by the Store Manager.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assists with store opening as needed, including preparing tills.
  • Perform store closing procedures, including closing tills, computer closeout and store and commercial lock-up.
  • Ensure assigned staff is at the registers at all times. Assist at the counter as needed.
  • Ensure customers are greeted and assisted by staff.
  • Maintains accurate stocking levels and quantities on hand to ensure fully stocked and functional store is available for our customers.
  • Assists Store Manager in responding to customer complaints, concerns or questions.
  • Delegates tasks for counter staff to complete when customers are not waiting.
  • Communicates with Store Manager to coordinate daily tasks for staff. Verify project completion.
  • Lead, train and hold staff accountable to maintain the cleanliness, organization and attractiveness of the store’s sales and support areas.
  • Mentor new and current staff. Communicate with the manager frequently regarding useful information about staff abilities, performance and needs.
  • Compiles inventory list for Store Manager of areas that need restocking, including garden and miscellaneous sections.
  • Organize merchandise throughout their section of the store and maintain clean fixture and displays.
  • Maintains staff by orienting and training employees and developing individual growth of team.
  • Support a safe and healthy work environment by enforcing organization standards and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Minimum two years supervisory experience in a retail store setting.
  • Must be able to work weekends and varying shifts.
  • Detail oriented
  • A strong working knowledge of merchandising, advertising, purchasing and pricing is essential.
  • The successful applicant will have excellent customer service skills, operations, and inventory control experience.
  • Good communication, time management and organizational skills are important.
  • Knowledge of garden and pet supplies will have preferred consideration.
  • Forklift experience is helpful. In-house certification is required.
