Working closely with the Firm Administrator the Business Development Manager coordinates all marketing, communications, and business development matters within the Firm. This includes, but is not limited to, coordination and implementation of marketing plans and programs, website maintenance, participation in local and statewide organizations, and Community Committee support.


  1. Works closely with the Firm Administrator to plan, coordinate, and implement marketing plans, programs, and client development.
  2. Works closely with the Firm Administrator on recruitment of attorneys.
  3. Maintains client and referral databases.
  4. Supports practices with client relationships.
  5. Oversees the website in order to ensure current content.
  6. Coordinates development and production of printed marketing materials, including brochures, letterhead, and business cards. Manages and updates printed materials.
  7. Coordinates production of all external advertisements, including radio, television, and print media, and community support advertisements.
  8. Coordinates professional listings. Works to maximize rankings and other benefits of these listings.
  9. Supports practice area initiatives and cross-marketing opportunities, including Starboard Leadership Consulting and Maine Fiduciary Services.
  10. Coordinates production and distribution of promotional items, including holiday cards and gifts.
  11. Manages preparation and distribution of press releases and other Firm announcements. Coordinates other media relations.
  12. Assists with planning and coordination of practice seminars.
  13. Assists with development and distribution of client newsletters.
  14. Coordinates attendance at charitable and other community events. Works to maintain appropriate Firm presence in the community, including at charitable and professional events and on community boards.
  15. Works closely with Firm Administrator to develop and monitor annual budget.
  16. Coordinates and prepares responses to RFPs from existing and prospective clients.
  17. Performs market research on prospective clients and industries.
  18. Monitors media for news articles involving Firm attorneys or legal matters.
  19. Works collaboratively with other departmental managers on projects, and to provide support and assistance.
  20. Assumes related responsibilities and performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of marketing and communications consistent with at least 3 years of work experience in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including above average writing and speaking ability.
  3. Professional presentation and demeanor.
  4. Ability to work under pressure, and to organize and prioritize numerous complex tasks and complete them under time constraints.
  5. Must be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Internet Explorer, etc.
  6. Must have a good understanding of the tools of social media and technology.
  7. Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

Working Conditions:

  1. Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, temperature, and the like.
  2. Occasional exposure to fumes, perfumes, and fragrances.

Physical Demands:

  1. Must be able to lift between 5 and 10 pounds consistently (normal office work lifting), and up to 25 pounds or more occasionally.
  2. Extensive walking and/or sitting may be required.
  3. Ability to climb stairs.
  4. Pushing and pulling of 15 pounds occasionally required.
  5. Infrequent use of stepstools/stepladders as needed.
  6. Extensive use of keyboards/computer terminals may be required.
